Many a year ago in a bay
Where the Cornish waves would break
Lived a girl who went by the name
Of Rosenwyn Melwyn May.
She was the fairest maid in the town
Every lad had knelt on the ground
To ask for her hand in sacred vow
But her heart was already bound.
She loved her a boy who was bound for the sea
For his father was a sailor, so would he be
And though his heart lay with hers in that bay
He said "Love, the sea calls and so I must away.
No you can't live off love for it don't make a living,
I belong on this boat with the sails and the riggings.
You're the prettiest petal that I've ever seen,
But my heart's half with you and half with the sea."
"But my love," Rosenwyn replied through her tears,
"We've been courting for over a year.
Won't you wed me right now and right here
I'll be forever yours, my dear."
"Rosenwyn, my sweet, although I am so fond
Of your ocean blue eyes and your hair long and blonde,
I cannot wed ye for the sea calls to me,
I'd miss you too strong if my wife you would be.
I've a name to uphold, of that name I am proud,
Sea salt in my blood stream and sweat on my brow,
But if you find that you miss me with all of your heart,
Look North on your compass, I'll be under that star."
So away Rosenwyn's love did sail
Left her heart so lonesome and frail.
Tears poured down her cheeks fair and pale,
How could love so mighty fail?
The pull of the sea was stronger than she
For the ocean was his mistress as cruel as can be
And though leaving his lady made him want to weep,
The sea had his soul, and his soul she would keep.

A ship on the water, light breeze in the sails
Spirits are high with the bravado of males.
One sailor is lonely, his love on the shore
His thoughts are about her and of nothing more.
A change in the air, a turn in the wind
Darkening of the skies, a warning meant for him.
"Captain I feel something amiss
Dark clouds to the East, sir, a storm due to hit."
"Fear not," mused the captain, "That storm is so far
We'll out-sail it easy toward that Northerly star."
But the ocean, full of jealousy, could read the sailor's mind.
"How dare he think about another, that sailor, he is mine."
A wave surged towards them, so violent and vast
And crashed o'er the starboard side as high as the mast.
Many men lost their footing, were swept overboard
The captain's eyes were full or terror, "Batten down the hatches!"
He roared.
But too late were his orders, for she'd claimed what she had boarded for.
In the ocean's grip was the sailor boy who's love dwelled on the shore.
"You can't have my love, my soul is not yours."
Sais the sailor to the ocean as he struggled in her jaws.
"Well if I can't have your love, boy, then neither can she
And I'll keep you down here in the water with me"
But as she tried to drag him deeper, as the air left his chest
His soul escaped her freezing grip, left his body with his last breath.

My love, he was a sailor proud
His eyes were blue as sky when you can't see any clouds.
My love, well he has gone from me now
He sailed far away and never returned again.
Oh they came, they sat me down
And told me that a storm had hit, his body was not found.
For he had drowned, the ocean dragged him down
To keep him for herself, his cruel mistress has him now.
So I climbed up yonder cliff above
To sit where we once sat and to mourn for my love
And I stayed there for so many a day
That they turned into months, but I could not move away.
I would watch the raging rolling sea
Ask her why she broke my heart, why she stole my love from me.
They would come, bring me food and blankets,
But nothing could fill this hole or warm my frozen soul.
Until one morning, when I woke the sea was calm
And sat right by my side my sailor's spirit, he had come.
He said, "My love, why must you sit and cry?
My soul escaped the ocean, I can't tell you how and not why
But I can't leave this lonely limbo until you let me go
Please don't mourn me anymore, though I know you love me so."
"My love, oh all I waited for
Was to hear your voice again, to see those eyes just once more
My love, now that you're here with me
I'll gladly let you go, but this time I'll follow thee."
So I stood and I moved towards the edge
Of the cliff where I had waited for my love for months on end.
There I stood, took one last steady breath.
"To die to be with you is the most perfect death."
